Battle is a market town in East Sussex, situated in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about five miles inland from the coast at Hastings. It sits on a ridge that overlooks the Pevensey Levels, and much of the town’s layout still follows the medieval footprint established after the events of 1066. The town actually grew around the abbey founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings; the abbey’s Great Gatehouse still dominates the southern end of the High Street. Geographically, it’s well-connected for the south-east, with the railway station on the direct line between London Charing Cross and Hastings, making the commute to the city about an hour and twenty minutes. Life here tends to revolve around the triangular marketplace and the long, linear High Street, which is lined with a mix of Georgian and timber-framed buildings. Outside the town centre, you’re quickly into dense woodland like Battle Great Wood, and while the town gets busy with visitors during the autumn anniversary events, the rest of the year it functions as a steady, practical hub for the surrounding villages.
