Brandon sits right on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk, tucked into the northern edge of Thetford Forest. It’s a town defined by its landscape; for centuries, it was the world’s centre for flint knapping, supplying the British Army with gunflints during the Napoleonic Wars. You can still see that heritage in the local architecture, with many of the older cottages built from the very flint dug out of the nearby Breckland heaths. Today, life revolves around the High Street and the river Little Ouse, which marks the county boundary. It’s a practical place with a proper range of shops, a railway station on the Ely-to-Norwich line, and the massive expanse of High Lodge and Brandon Country Park right on the doorstep. It’s ideal if you spend your weekends outdoors, as you’ve got miles of forest trails for cycling and walking, though it’s worth keeping in mind that the local RAF bases mean you’ll often hear the roar of jets overhead.
