Chester is a city that still follows the pattern of its Roman origins, centered around the distinctive "Cross" where the four main streets meet. It is one of the few places in Britain where you can still walk the full two-mile circuit of the elevated Roman and medieval walls, providing a vantage point over the city and the hills of North Wales in the distance. The layout is practical for everyday life, with the unique 13th-century dual-level "Rows" allowing for two tiers of shops along the main thoroughfares, which remains a useful feature for dodging the rain. Life here tends to focus on the River Dee and the Groves, with the large expanse of the Roodee (the UK’s oldest racecourse) acting as a major green lung for the city centre. Geographically, it sits right on the edge of the Cheshire Plain, acting as a gateway to both the Wirral and the Welsh border, while the direct rail links to Liverpool, Manchester, and London make it a very functional hub for those who need to travel beyond the county.
