Chellaston sits about five miles south of Derby city center, effectively operating as a self-contained village despite its growth as a popular residential suburb. Historically, the area was defined by its gypsum industry; the local "Chellaston Alabaster" was highly prized during the Middle Ages and used in the construction of several notable tombs and altars across Europe. Today, the village layout is a mix of the old sandstone core around St Peter’s Church and more modern estates that have expanded towards the A50. It is well-served by a central shopping parade along Derby Road and has a strong sense of community anchored by its well-regarded local schools and the busy community center. Its position on the southern edge of the city is a practical one, providing quick access to the Peak District and the M1, while the nearby Trent and Mersey Canal offers a quieter, green escape for walking and cycling towards Swarkestone.
