Hilton serves as a key residential hub in South Derbyshire, positioned roughly nine miles southwest of Derby and well-served by its proximity to the A50. Historically, the village was a quiet agricultural settlement, and you can still see the timber-framed Old Post Office and the 14th-century church in neighboring Marston on Dove, which reminds you of its older roots. Today, however, it is largely defined by the significant modern developments that grew out of the former MOD vehicle storage site and the old gravel pits. It is a practical choice for those working in the Midlands, thanks to its links to the Toyota plant at Burnaston and the nearby Hatton railway station. While much of the local life centers around the primary school, the row of shops on Welland Road, and the village’s several pubs, there is a good amount of green space nearby, including the Hilton Gravel Pits Nature Reserve, which has reclaimed an industrial site to provide a quiet spot for walking among dragonflies and wetland birds.
