Eastbourne sits on a stretch of the Sussex coast where the rolling chalk hills of the South Downs finally meet the English Channel at the dramatic cliffs of Beachy Head. Unlike many seaside towns that grew haphazardly, much of Eastbourne was laid out in the 19th century under the direction of the Duke of Devonshire, which explains the wide, tree-lined avenues and the deliberate absence of shops directly on the seafront. While it is often associated with its Victorian pier and the manicured carpet gardens along the promenade, the town functions as a practical hub for the region, offering a mix of quiet residential pockets and a town centre that has seen recent redevelopment. To the west, the landscape opens immediately into the National Park, providing miles of clifftop walking trails, while the eastern side is defined by the Sovereign Harbour marina complex. It is a place shaped by its geography - shielded by the hills, it frequently records some of the highest sunshine hours in the UK, maintaining a pace of life that feels distinct from the busier coastal hubs further west.
