Gillingham is a town with two distinct identities, though most people know it as a key part of the Medway urban sprawl in Kent. It sits on a slope leading down to the River Medway, and its character is still heavily defined by its proximity to the historic Chatham Dockyard; many of the residential streets were originally built to house the thousands of shipwrights and sailors who worked there. Geographically, it’s well-placed for getting around, with the railway line providing a direct link into London Victoria or St Pancras International in under an hour, and the A2 just a short drive away. Locally, life tends to centre around the High Street and the Great Lines Heritage Park - a massive, open green space that offers views right across the naval buildings towards the water. It’s also famously the home of Gillingham FC, the only Football League club in Kent, which brings a particular energy to the town on match days. It isn’t a postcard-perfect commuter village, but it is a practical, established place with a deep-rooted maritime history and plenty of room to breathe down by the Riverside Country Park.
