Godalming sits in a deep valley carved by the River Wey, surrounded by the wooded hills of the Surrey Hills National Landscape. It’s an ancient market town with a layout that still follows its medieval roots, though much of the architecture you see today along the High Street is a mix of timber-framed Tudor buildings and classic red-brick Victoriana. Historically, it was a centre for the wool and hosiery trades, but it is perhaps best known for becoming the first town in the world to have a public electricity supply in 1881. Geographically, it’s well-placed for those who need to get into London, with the Portsmouth Direct Line getting you to Waterloo in under fifty minutes, yet you can walk five minutes from the station and be on the LAMMAS lands - open floodplains that offer a real sense of space. It manages to feel like a self-contained community rather than just a commuter hub, largely because it has retained its own character and a high proportion of independent shops and tucked-away pubs.
