Hessle sits just outside the western edge of Hull, marking the spot where the city’s urban spread meets the more open landscapes of the East Riding. It is defined by its position on the north bank of the Humber, tucked right under the massive span of the Humber Bridge. Historically, the town was built on shipbuilding and chalk quarrying, and you can still see traces of that industrial past down at the foreshore, which is now a popular spot for walking along the river. The heart of the town is The Square, which feels more like a traditional village centre than a suburb, home to a mix of long-standing local shops and a weekly market. It’s a practical place to live, well-connected by its own railway station on the Selby line and quick access to the A63, yet it retains a distinct identity separate from Hull, with the expansive parkland of the Humber Bridge Country Park - locally known as Little Switzerland - providing a green buffer on its western flank.
