Nestled in a deep valley of the Chiltern Hills, High Wycombe is a town defined by its topography and its industrial heritage. For centuries, the surrounding beech woods fueled a world-renowned furniture industry, earning it the title of the chair-making capital of the world; a history still visible in the architecture of the old workshops scattered near the town centre. Geographically, it sits in a strategic spot in Buckinghamshire, balanced between the rolling chalk escapements of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the practicalities of the M40 corridor. The River Wye, though largely culverted through the main shopping areas, reappears at The Rye - a vast, ancient park that serves as the town’s communal backyard, complete with a historic lido and boating lake. While the town centre has modernised significantly with the Eden complex, the steep residentially-lined hills that rise up from the valley floor provide a constant reminder of its market town origins and its position as a gateway to the Chilterns.
