Formby sits on a flat coastal shelf between the busier hubs of Liverpool and Southport, defined largely by its unique geography. It is one of the few places in the UK where the town feels secondary to its landscape; the residential streets eventually give way to an expansive, prehistoric coastline of mobile sand dunes and pine woodlands. These woods are a noted sanctuary for the native red squirrel, while the beach itself reveals layers of history during low spring tides, when 4,000-year-old human and animal footprints are often visible in the exposed mud beds. Logistically, the town is divided into two main areas - Freshfield and Formby - each served by its own station on the Northern Line, making the commute into Liverpool Central about thirty minutes. Life here tends to revolve around the village centre, known locally as ‘The Village’, which holds a mix of independent shops and high-street basics. While it has grown significantly since its days as a fishing and cockling village, Formby retains a quiet, self-contained character, buffered from the sprawling suburbs of North Liverpool by a protected green belt of farmland.
