Westbrook sits just to the west of Margate, serving as a quieter, largely residential buffer between the main town centre and the village of Westgate-on-Sea. Life here tends to revolve around the promenade and Westbrook Bay, a sandy beach that remains popular with locals because it stays accessible even at high tide, unlike some of the neighbouring coves. Geologically, it is defined by its low chalk cliffs and the distinctive rock pools that emerge when the tide goes out. Historically, the area developed significantly during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras as a convalescent retreat, a legacy still visible in the sturdy red-brick architecture and the presence of the Royal Sea Bathing Hospital building (now converted into apartments). It feels more settled than the central Margate seafront, with the Royal Esplanade offering a wide, open space for walking or cycling toward Minnis Bay. While it lacks a dense commercial high street of its own, it has a handful of useful shops and cafes along the Canterbury Road, and the railway station is a short walk away, providing a direct link to London Victoria and St Pancras.
