New Milton sits in a practical spot on the edge of the New Forest, positioned almost exactly halfway between the popular coastal towns of Lymington and Christchurch. Originally a small village called Milton, the town as it exists today grew up around the railway station after the line opened in 1888, which explains why the layout feels a bit more structured than the winding lanes of the nearby forest. It’s a convenient place for getting outdoors; you can be under the ancient oaks of the National Park in five minutes or down at Barton-on-Sea’s pebble beaches and high sandstone cliffs in about the same time. The high street is functional and busy, centered around a mix of local shops and the distinctive clock tower, and while it’s a quiet area, it has the benefit of being on the main line to London Waterloo. It feels like a settled, working town that just happens to have some of the country’s best woodland and coastline right on its doorstep.
