Pevensey sits on a slight ridge overlooking the low-lying Pevensey Levels, a vast expanse of grazing marsh that once formed a wide tidal bay. The village is famously anchored by its Roman shore fort, which was later repurposed into a medieval castle; it marks the spot where William the Conqueror landed in 1066, though the sea has since retreated over a mile. Today, the area is split between the quiet, historic village and the more coastal, residential stretch of Pevensey Bay. Life here is governed by the landscape: the Levels offer wide-open skies and a network of drainage ditches (known locally as sewers) that support diverse birdlife, while the pebble beach provides a rugged stretch for walking. It is a practical spot for those who value space, with a local railway station on the Eastbourne-to-Hastings line and a small selection of essential shops and traditional pubs that keep the village self-contained without feeling isolated.
