Bitterne sits on a ridge to the east of the River Itchen, functioning as a busy suburban hub about two miles from Southampton’s city centre. Its name is derived from the Old English for "bend in the river," a nod to its position where the Itchen curves sharply around the nearby Riverside Park. While modern Bitterne is defined by its pedestrianised precinct and a wide variety of independent shops and essential services, its history runs deep; the Roman settlement of Clausentum was located just down the hill in Bitterne Manor. The area is topographically varied, with steep residential streets offering views across the water toward the city docks, and it remains well-connected by the A3024 which serves as a main artery for those commuting toward the M27 or over Northam Bridge. It lacks the self-conscious trendiness of some other city pockets, opting instead for a practical, established atmosphere with straightforward access to both the waterfront and the more expansive green spaces of the Itchen Valley.
