St. Bees is a distinctive coastal village sitting on the edge of the Lake District National Park, defined by the red sandstone cliffs of the Head - the only heritage coast in the North West. Life here focuses on the long, sandy sweep of the beach and the promenade, which marks the traditional starting point of the 190-mile Coast to Coast Walk. Geographically, the village is somewhat self-contained, separated from the industrial hubs of the West Cumbrian coast by the high ground of the Head, yet it remains practical for daily life due to its stops on the Cumbrian Coast Line railway. The history of the settlement is visible in the architecture of the 12th-century Priory and the presence of the independent St. Bees School, which has influenced the village's layout for over four centuries. It’s a place where the weather is often shaped by the Irish Sea, offering a quiet, maritime character that feels quite different from the busier tourist centres of the inner Lakes.
