Sudbury is a traditional market town in south Suffolk, set within the Stour Valley near the Essex border. It is largely defined by the Water Meadows that surround it; because these grazing lands are prone to seasonal flooding, they have never been built upon, allowing the countryside to reach right into the town centre. Historically, Sudbury flourished as a weaving town, a legacy still visible in its narrow streets and the flint-faced architecture of its three medieval churches. Today, it remains a rare example of a town that still supports a working silk industry. While the town is the terminus for a branch line connecting to London Liverpool Street via Marks Tey, it retains a distinct, self-contained character, with a twice-weekly market held on the hill and a network of footpaths, such as the Valley Walk, that follow the path of the old railway line towards Long Melford.
