Upminster marks the spot where the suburban sprawl of East London finally gives way to the open fields of the Essex Great Park. Sitting at the very end of the District Line, it offers a rare combination of a reliable Underground connection alongside a C2C rail link that reaches Fenchurch Street in about 20 minutes. The town’s history is still visible in the 18th-century Upminster Windmill, which remains one of the few surviving smock mills in the country, and the medieval St Laurence Church. Most of the local life centers around the long high street, which is notable for being home to Roomes, an independent department store that has been a fixture here since 1888. It is a geographically well-defined place, bordered by the Ingrebourne Valley to the west and the M25 to the east, making it feel self-contained rather than just another stop on the line. Most people appreciate it for the balance of pace; you have the convenience of a London borough, but with the Thames Chase forest and traditional farmland just a short walk from the station.
