Walsingham sits in the rolling countryside of North Norfolk, a few miles inland from the coast at Wells-next-the-Sea. It is actually two distinct villages - Little Walsingham and Great Walsingham - divided by the River Stiffkey. Most of the daily activity centers on Little Walsingham, which maintains a distinct medieval character with its narrow streets and timber-framed buildings. The village has been a major site of pilgrimage since the 11th century, a legacy that remains visible today through the ruins of the Priory and the steady presence of several shrines. This history gives the place a quiet, contemplative atmosphere that persists even outside the busier summer months. Practically speaking, it is well-served for a village of its size, offering a renowned local farm shop, a primary school, and a couple of pubs, while the nearby market towns of Fakenham and Holt provide more extensive services and transport links. It feels very much like a working community, rooted in its unique heritage but tied firmly to the rural rhythms of the surrounding farmland.
